1238 A.D. = Bible divided into chapters by Cardinal Hugo de S. Carlo (Some suggest it was Stephen Langton in 1228 A.D.)
1551 A.D. = Bible divided into verses by Robertus Stephanus (Some suggest it was R. Nathan in 1448 A.D and that Robert Stephens divided the New Testament into verses in 1551.)
1560 A.D. = Italics were first used to indicate words used in the translations which were not found in the original

The Wycliffe Bible was the first translation of the English Bible. John Wycliffe was responsible for initiating the translation, which was finished by John Purvey in approximately 1388 A.D.
